Webring Protest Jan 1, 2001

You unhappy about the destruction of the Webring system by Yahoo!? So am I! Are you feeling helpless because you don't know what you can do about it? After all, Yahoo! is a huge company - what could anyone possibly do?

Well, we can move our rings to other systems, we can create our own webring systems and we can protest! That's what 010101 is all about.

We are protesting Yahoo's wanton and malicious destruction of the webring system. Yes, they said they were making it "better". What they did, in the name of getting advertising dollars, was destroy a huge "community of communities" on the web. There were over 80,000 webrings at the time of the takeover, all devoted in one way or another to linking websites together in communities.

(Webring is closed)

To join the protest you can do the following:

  1. Join the 010101 discussion list
  2. Join the 010101 Net Ring.
  3. Read our articles on this site about the changes to the Yahoo! webring system, starting from "webrings".
  4. Move your webrings off Yahoo! by Jan 1, 2001 (but remember to leave the ring intact at Yahoo! with at least one site). You can create webrings at RingSurf or choose a RingLink provider (or if you are really daring you can set up your own RingLink system).
  5. On Jan 1, 2001 delete all of your Yahoo! webrings
  6. Get involved by letting other ringmasters know about the protest and telling them what they can do.
  7. And if you like, share your webring stories on the discussion list
