Webring Update Sept 23, 2000

Subject: RingLink code

Well, I've had a very busy week. Let's see, I found a provider (addr.com) which supports CGI and moved my site over (domain is in the process of getting changed).

Got the RingLink code and set it up on the site. I've never used CGI before ... yet it only took me about three hours to get set up. Now, if I'd followed the instructions I would not have made a stupid error and spent 2 hours trying to figure that out. Point being, RingLink is pretty easy stuff.

I sent an email out to most of the ringmasters of the 250 rings of which I am a member asking them what they were going to do. Results so far: 5 staying with Yahoo, 40 or so already moved or moving now, another 50 or so will be moving as soon as they can get the time or are making up their minds, a dozen or so dropping their webrings entirely and haven't heard from the rest. Not surprisingly, most ringmasters who are moving are going to RingSurf.

Also been very busy resubmitting to the newly moved rings. I found it very interesting that most of the very big rings - especially RAOK and it's collection of half a dozen - are moving now. I don't envy those ringmasters.

Also am finding out that ringmasters are some of the nicest, most interesting people on the net.

Took over a couple of the webrings bieng abandoned and will probably take over a few more.

Now I need to move my remaining sites (4 for my wife and 3 for me) to addr.com and get my own rings set up on my RingLink system(s). I think I may set up at least one public ringlink hub and keep a private one for my own rings.

My opinion: I now strongly dislike Yahoo for their contemptous actions but I think the change is actually rather positive. I see rings which were stagnant becoming alive again, people working together and I personally got a better host and learned a little bit of CGI. However, the yahoo club webringnews was a lot of fun until the moderator started deleting everything that's even slightly anti- yahoo or that he doesn't like. Now the moderator can do anything he wants, but the club is nowhere near as informative and plain fun as it used to be. Kind of sad...

That's my 2 cents so far.

Do make sure that your previous provider knows that your site info needs to be removed from their DNS database or you will have some peculiar things go down....
