Ringlink Webrings

This tutorial describes what you need to know to create and manage a Ringlink Webring.

How to create a Ringlink Webring

First you must find (or host yourself) a Ringlink system. You can find rings in the Ringlink directory.

Once you find a Ringlink system which accepts new rings, you are in business. Read the instructions (if any), fill out the form (shown below) and submit your request. The ring will be automatically created.

A short text description of the ring. This can be whatever you want, but should be descriptive of the purpose of your ring. Type in a description of the ring, something which truly informs your future ring members what your ring is all about. The home page of the ring. This is the page which describes in extreme detail all about your ring. You should include ring criteria (the standards which sites need to meet to become members of your ring), a nice description and anything else that you want to communicate to your prospective ring members. A small bit of text which identifies your ring. Enter some text which will prevent unauthorized access to your webring controls. Choose a good password which contains some text and numbers, and is more than 8 characters long. These are recommendations, as the field is not validated. Enter the name of the ringmaster (your name perhaps). This field is not validated and can be anything you want. Enter the email address of the ringmaster. This is necessary for the owner of the ring system to get into contact with you, and also allows your ring members to contact you if necessary. Check this box to allow people to add their sites to the ring. Unchecking this box more or less freezes the ring at it's current membership. This may be useful, for example, if you are going on vacation or for some other reason cannot process additions. On those Ringlink systems which allow non-English versions, enter the language of the ring. This will display all text in the specified language. Note that it does not translate anything - this option simply displays the Ringlink messages in the specified language. Press Submit when you are ready to create the ring. If you want to start over, press the Reset button.

Fill in each of the fields on the screen as described below.

Ring Title
A short text description of the ring. This can be whatever you want, but should be descriptive of the purpose of your ring.

A small bit of text which identifies your ring. Something like "anything", "greenmandms" or "grandmothers" works fine. Your ID needs to be unique within the ring system you are attempting to join, but other than that can be anything you want.

Language
On those Ringlink systems which allow non-English versions, enter the language of the ring. This will display all text in the specified language. Note that it does not translate anything - this option simply displays the Ringlink messages in the specified language.
Submit/Reset
Press Submit when you are ready to create the ring. If you want to start over, press the Reset button.

A confirmation screen is displayed.

That's all there is to it. Your ring is created.

You will receive an email message sent to the address that you specified, which confirms the addition of your ring.

At this point, you do have the option to add your ring to the Ringlink Webring Directory. This is a great way to promote your new ring - thus, it is highly recommended to add it.

Now you must do some more work.
